Lightning Warning System

lightning warning systems

The BTD-200 lightning warning system is a complete detection and warning system which has been developed from the Biral range of professional aviation grade lightning detection systems. We are the exclusive UK representatives for Biral in the UK process sector. A little about Biral;

Biral Meteorological sensors

Lightning warning system for the process industry

Its proven detection technology reliably detects the presence of all forms of lightning out to a range of 22 miles from the sensor.

Designed to be quickly and easily installed, it comes complete with a universal mains voltage power supply and the essential PC server application Lightning Works for monitoring, warning and data logging of approaching thunderstorms.

The BTD-200 is an ideal upgrade for users of field-mills in the process sector. Reliable thunderstorm detection allows chemical process operations to take the appropriate safety precautions in a timely manner and only when necessary.

BDT-200 Lightning warning system Overview

  • Quasi Electrostatic detection method
  • Single standalone sensor
  • Detection range, 35km
  • High detection efficiency for all lightning types
  • Good range estimation
  • Very low false alarm rate
  • Pre-Strike warnings
  • Direction finding capability with radio based accessory

The Biral system uses a quasi electrostatic detection method

  • Detects change in electrostatic field when lightning strike occurs
  • Electrostatic field change is low frequency – unlike noise sources
  • Strong signal for all lightning types gives good detection efficiency – unlike radio waves
  • Detection up to 100km possible
  • Range can be estimated from signal strength – unlike radio waves
  • Detection of strong electric field allows pre-strike warnings
  • No moving parts – reliable and very little maintenance required
  • No direction finding capability
  • Used by BTD-200, BTD-300 & BTD-350

Once the storm threat has passed, normal operations can be resumed quickly and safely, so protecting plant and life whilst maximising operating efficiencies.

What is thunder and lightning

  • Thunderstorms occur when differently charged regions form in a cloud
  • Charge generated by friction between rising ice crystals and failing rain and graupel
  • Lightning occurs when the charge neutralises in a burst of electrical current
  • Thunder is the noise caused by the current rapidly heating the air
  • There are three main types of lightning:-
  • Cloud to ground, CG
  • Intra cloud, IC
  • Cloud to cloud, CC

What is cloud to ground lightning?

  • Most dangerous and damaging form of lightning
  • High peak current
  • Negative cloud to ground lowers negative charge to the ground, usually from the lower portion of the cloud
  • Positive cloud to ground usually strikes the ground from the top or within the cloud
  • Positive C-G unusual but generally stronger than negative C-G
  • Not the most commonly occurring form of lightning

What is intra cloud lightning?

  • Most common form of lightning
  • Accounts for ~70% of all lightning
  • Flash is within the cloud
  • Does not reach the ground
  • Peak current weaker than CG
  • Harder for traditional radio based sensors to detect
  • Sometimes called sheet lightning

What is cloud to cloud lightning?

  • Similar to Intra Cloud Lightning
  • Flash is between two clouds
  • Flash does not reach the ground
  • Peak current weaker than CG
  • Harder for traditional radio based sensors to detect
  • Sometimes called sheet lightning
  • Any non-CG lightning often referred to as IC, even if it was technically between two clouds (CC) or cloud-to-air
